THE BEST DIVE OF YOUR LIVE A huge variety of extraordinary dive sites line Belize's coast. The most famous, the Great Blue Hole, is considered the holy grail of dives. An almost perfectly circular sinkhole 1000 feet wide and over 400 feet deep, it's the world's largest, treating adventurous divers to spectacular views of underwater stalactites, stalagmites and columns that date from the last ice age.
And there are so many more adventures to be had. From Tureffe Island and Glovers Reef atolls to the many famous cayes and of course, the largely unexplored and still pristine barrier reef, there are hundreds of phenomenal dive sites to explore, each as distinct as it is outstanding. From gradually sloping ocean floors to astonishing 2,000-foot sheer walls where the ever-changing underwater flora and fauna never cease to enchant, divers can spend weeks in Belize and still see something new each day.
Best Places for Scuba Diving in Belize
Beautiful and idyllic Belize consistently ranks near the top of the list for best scuba diving destinations. Recommended by experts as one of the best dive locations in the world, Belize offers many reasons for why it should be your number one scuba diving vacation choice.
Spectacular Dive Spots
The Belize Barrier Reef runs the length of the country's coastline and is the second largest barrier reef on earth. This beautiful and pristine 185-mile reef is still largely unexplored and offers a huge variety of superb scuba dive and snorkeling sites. These range from easy dives for novices to astonishing 2,000-foot sheer walls for expert divers. You could spend weeks in Belize and have a new diving experience every day!
Turneffe Islands and the Lighthouse Reef Atolls are magnets for experienced divers. These two atoll formations feature myriad opportunities for world-class wall, drift, and coral-garden diving. A third mid-ocean atoll, Glover's Reef, is less travelled to, but also offers splendid diving. These three atolls along Belize's hundreds of cayes offer diving experiences unparalleled in the Western Hemisphere.
The fantastic Great Blue Hole at Lighthouse Reef is a rare and wonderful diving spot, considered to be akin to a religious experience for diving enthusiasts. This perfectly circular limestone sinkhole, approximately 1,000 feet wide and over 400 feet deep, is like a giant pupil in the turquoise eye of the ocean. The water is crystal clear and its temperature remains steady at approximately 76 F all year round. Physical features include large stalactites and stalagmites that date back to the last ice age. Although there are few creatures in the hole itself, you may see reef, bull, or hammerhead sharks at a depth of about 130 feet. The surrounding area teems with sea life such as neon gobies, angelfish, butterfly fish, shrimp, elkhorn coral, purple sea fans and small groupers.
If you are keen to encounter wildlife, Gladden Spit is a natural spawning ground for a variety of species. Massive whale sharks are common from March through June. The waters of Belize are home to hundreds of coral and more than 400 fish species, sharks (including mako sharks and Caribbean reef sharks), turtles, sponges, rays and manatees.
Other Belize Advantages
Compared to other world-class diving spots, Belize is relatively close for Canadians and Americans to travel to. Making the trek to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, for instance, is expensive and involves a lengthy flight. Located just south of Mexico, Belize City is a short hop from anywhere in North America and prices are not prohibitive.
English is the official language of Belize, which was once a British colony. The country has a highly developed tourist industry, with diving resorts catering to a variety of budgets from private island resorts to chain hotels.
There's a wide range of foods available, including local rice and beans, Mexican-style fast foods and fine dining. You'll want to sample the fresh fish dishes and fresh fruit such as oranges, watermelon, star fruit, soursop, mangoes and papaya.
There are also many exciting activities to experience when you're not diving, including sampling the nightlife, canoeing, birding, caving, visiting local historical sites and more.
